Question:

Is it common to run a fever while menstruating?

PEER ANSWER

I’ve never experienced this myself. However, I do know that a fever may be a sign of infection, so it’s probably not a bad idea to give your health provider a call or schedule an appointment. Our health expert Molly may also have some thoughts on this, be sure to check out her response.

MOM ANSWER

No. While we all experience different signs and symptoms, fever isn’t typical. It could be that your fever has nothing to do with your period at all — maybe you just have a cold or virus of some sort. But if you’re using a tampon and experiencing any other unusual symptoms along with the fever, you ought to visit your healthcare professional. Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) isn’t very common, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Some of the other symptoms to look for include flu-like symptoms, stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, lightheadedness, pain, and a rash.

EXPERT ANSWER

No, this is not common and could be a sign of a serious condition. Unless you have other symptoms of illness like a cough or runny nose, if you have a fever of 101 or higher while on your period, you should be seen by your healthcare provider. If you have a fever and a rash that looks like a sunburn, you should go directly to the emergency room to be assessed.
