Question:

Why is it that when I'm on my period, I'm never hungry or don't feel like eating?

PEER ANSWER
You know what? This happens to me too! In my case, I think it’s because I’m still stuffed from devouring massive amounts of lunchmeat the week before (lunchmeat is my PMS crave-of-choice). But this could be happening for a number of reasons including hormones, a full feeling created by bloating, or cramps. Whatever the reason, you’re not alone. I normally combat this too-full feeling by eating something light, like a salad or soup, and staying hydrated with coconut water. Hope this helps!
MOM ANSWER

Each of us reacts so differently to our periods. It just depends on how the hormones are kicking around inside of you. You sound the opposite of me. There is no right or wrong, we all just try to modify during this time. For me, I try not to eat too many salty chips. For you, just ensure you are getting the nutrients you need, and of course lots of water.

EXPERT ANSWER

The menstrual cycle can cause some changes in your appetite. Many girls and women experience an increase in appetite. However, because of symptoms like nausea, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea, some don’t feel like eating. Make sure that you are getting plenty of liquids to drink to help with bloating and constipation. Also, eating a diet of non-greasy foods that are easily digested might help with any nausea. If your symptoms are severe or you have vomiting or diarrhea that keeps you home from school  or from doing activities, make an appointment with your healthcare provider to talk about your appetite changes.
