Periods & Everyday Life

Q&A: My bf wants to be intimate together even when I am on my period and I just feel so ugly and disgusting. Help?

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. YOU GET TO DO WHATEVER YOU WANT, the decision is up to you. If you just don’t feel like it, don’t do it. It’s normal not to feel like dancing in a white bikini when you have your period. Let me guess, you feel bloated, irritable, and tired when you have your period? Just a few of many common PMS symptoms. Know that you don’t look any different. I have never looked at a friend and thought, “she looks like she’s on her period.” But, having sex while on your period is perfectly fine, common and can be fun, so let’s at least entertain the thought. Men don’t mind, why should we? Period blood does not have any odor, and for some, libido or sex drive increases during menses. Explore your options and choose to do what makes you happy! Always practice safe sex and use birth control. Discuss your thoughts and feelings with your boyfriend to help him understand what you experience when you have your period.

Remember, all intimacy does not have to lead to intercourse. There are many other ways to spend some physical bonding time.
Being with your boyfriend during your period is truly a personal choice and he should respect that you are just not feeling “in the mood”. It takes two to tango here, and you are an integral part of this equation. Share your feelings with him and he should understand, if not... well, you have some thinking to do. Please remember these two words: Your Choice!
I totally understand. When I'm on my period, I don't exactly feel my sexiest. I'm crampy, usually breaking out, and sometimes cranky. But we both should feel sexy! Because as corny as it sounds, what makes you more of a woman than your period? Okay, okay, I know that's no huge consolation. Just know that your boyfriend doesn't see you how you do. He thinks you're beautiful and sexy both off and on your period (trust me on this one!). In fact, if there weren't any physical evidence, he probably wouldn't even notice a difference. At the end of the day, though, there's no need to force yourself to be intimate while on your period if you don't feel comfortable with it. But please understand that just because you feel ugly and disgusting doesn't mean you are – to him or anyone else!
