Question :

Can you douche safely on your period, or should you wait?

I don’t recommend you douche while you’re on your period. Though I’m not completely knowledgeable on the subject of douching, I feel that douching while on your period is counterproductive, or rather, just useless. After douching, your period will continue, so not much is getting done in terms of “cleaning yourself”. If you’re going to douche, I’d say to wait until once your period’s over.  To address the act of douching, people have recommended avoiding using a douche too frequently. Regular douching can change the chemical balance of your vagina and make it more prone to infections. I’m not saying “nay” to douching, just to too much douching and douching while on your period.

Personally, I don’t subscribe to douching, especially because I see your menstrual cycle as a natural douche, in a weird way. You period is the shedding of your uterus lining, a cleansing of your insides if you will. To me, douching is an unnecessary and potentially unhealthy act.

That being said, if I were to douche, I would probably wait until after my period, as the presumed point of doing so is to give you a just clean feeling. I can understand why after a period you’d want to feel “clean” but trust me -- you are.

Technically, it is safe to douche while you are on your period. However, medical professionals now agree that not only is douching unnecessary, but it may also INCREASE a woman’s risk for vaginal infections. So, the best way to keep your vagina healthy is to clean it as you would any other part of your body – with water and a gentle soap when you shower or bathe.
