Q&A: Will I grow after my period?

I’ve got good news for you: YES! Most girls still grow an inch or two after they get their periods. Some girls will even grow a bit more if they have a first period and then no more for many months. Any way you slice it, you will probably still grow at least a little after your period starts. Woo Hoo!

As a mom, I recall exactly what I looked like and yes indeed I continued to grow. I grew taller and the training bra was pretty much no longer necessary by seventh grade. Take a look around at your friends when you show up in the fall for school. Do you notice how much they have changed?  And take a look at the medical take on periods and growing from our health expert, Dr. Molly.

It’s hard to say whether or not you’ll grow after your period. It’s likely, but definitely not a sure thing. There are some girls who continue to grow and there are others who don’t. Believe me, it took me a while to accept that when I measured myself and thought, “Really? That’s all I get?” I chugged milk with the hopes that a gallon of it would give me at least an extra centimeter, but instead of getting taller, I just got lighter after throwing it all (and some more) up. I’ll admit, not my proudest moment.
